Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy
Not all vision problems require surgery.  Many can be treated effectively with vision therapy, a customized, non-invasive program that helps the eyes and brain work better together.
Vision therapy can help with:
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Crossed or misaligned eyes (strabismus)
  • Double vision
  • Visual processing issues that affect reading, learning or focus
This treatment is beneficial for both children and adults who have trouble with eye coordination or concentration.  Vision therapy goes beyond eye exercises. It strengthens the connection between the eyes and the brain, which is essential for clear and comfortable vision.

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the nature of vision therapy:

Q: How does vision therapy work?
A: It uses progressive vision exercises performed under the supervision of your eye care provider.   Each set of exercises is tailored to meet the individual visual needs of a patient.   These exercises are done 1-2 times per week in sessions lasting 30 minutes to a full hour.   The exercises are designed to continue until visual processing problems show improvement.

Q: What is the purpose of the vision exercises?
A: Vision exercises are designed to help patients improve basic visual skills that connect the eyes with the brain.
These exercises can improve visual efficiency by changing how a patient interprets images.   This helps them see and understand images correctly.

Q: Do these exercises simply strengthen eye muscles?
A: Nothing about vision therapy is centered on strengthening eye muscles.  These muscles can be strengthened through orthoptic if they need strengthening.   This therapy is all about improving vision problems , that may interfere with learning by strengthening the neurological pathways between the eyes and the brain.

Q: What is the first step in a vision therapy program?
A: A comprehensive vision exam is necessary before starting therapy.    Following the exam, your eye care provider can determine whether or not this type of therapy is the recommended treatment for your vision problems.

Q: Is there scientific evidence that vision therapy works?
A: Yes.  Research shows that vision therapy is effective in improving visual function.   It can help reduce issues that interfere with reading, learning, and daily activities.   Like physical or occupational therapy, vision therapy is a proven treatment within its area of focus.

Q: Who can benefit from vision therapy?
A: Both children and adults can benefit from vision therapy. It’s especially helpful for children with reading or learning difficulties caused by visual processing issues—not just eyesight problems.
These issues often can’t be detected without a comprehensive eye exam. Adults who experience eye strain or focus problems from long hours on computers may also see improvement through vision therapy.
